Recently I decided to take on @ProBlogger’s challenge of 31 Days to Building a Better Blog (A.K.A. 31DBBB), I managed to get the Elevator Pitch for StuartRyan.com done yesterday and today we have a first attempt at the Elevator Pitch for TechnicalNotebook.

This is still a work in process at the moment and I am only 60% happy with it but I have to start somewhere so it will evolve over time. I certainly welcome any feedback at all that anyone has be it positive or negative.

“Working in today’s industry as an IT Professional I often come across tips, tricks, creative and thought provoking work-arounds and tidbits that may be useful to both myself and others at some point in time. After working on a personal knowledgebase of this information for some time I wished document and share my experiences. Therefore Technical Notebook is where I share scripts, how-tos, reviews, tidbits, professional learning and experiences.”

A few days ago I decided to give CloudFlare a try on my blogs to help speed up the loading time and also act as another barrier of security for them (as we all know WordPress while being great software is often a target for security holes).

The system has a few experimental features (which at this stage unfortunately break certain WordPress plugins) however with all the stable features turned on the system works beautifully. So far the system has improved the loading times of my blogs significantly and was extremely painless to install. Essentially the system is a reverse proxy for your site and has various features inbuilt in that proxy to speed up the loading and also reduce the total load on your server.

If you have a blog they have a free and a paid service and it in some ways acts like a CDN (Content Delivery Network) by caching most commonly loaded parts of your site. So please let me know if you have any issues in the coming days loading anything on my blogs and I will look to debug them ASAP.

After having issues with Commission Junction zeroing out my account recently as I had not earned any new commissions in a while I had been hunting around for a better way to get affiliate commissions on some of my posts.

Sidebar: I have never actually made a single cent LOL I blog because I enjoy it, not to make money but I figure I might as well have the links there especially when I am doing reviews of products and that sort of thing.

So today I have installed VigLink to see what will happen, basically it automatically handles all the affiliate stuff I need without me having to do anything. In the interest of complete disclosure this does now mean that any link out of my blog may be an affiliate link but once again I stress that this in no way changes the content that I write and does not influence my opinions at all.

I am very happy to say that Atlassian has been kind enough to offer full licenses to me for my development site Open Source Battlefield.

After setting myself up with JIRA, Confluence, Greenhopper and Crowd, I applied to the sales team at Atlassian for a license based on the nature of software that will be released on Open Source Battlefield. The team got back to me in a couple of days and I can now happily say that the new site is up and running with all the bells and whistles.

So thank you very much to Atlassian for the following products and supporting my open source development initiatives. So now I can get on to all the documentation and coding I have backlogged in my brain which I will be doing in due course.

I just wanted to extend a warm welcome to any SingleHop Dedicated Server customers that drop by over the next few days. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by Daniel from SingleHop recently regarding my experiences at SingleHop for their new newsletter.

As I said to Daniel in my email I could not be happier with the service I get from SingleHop and hence why I have stuck with them for longer than any host I have used previously.

Seeing as we are here, for all those SingleHop visitors, what is it that you love about SingleHop? I would be curious to hear your experiences as they have always been great for me.

Anyhoo, you will probably notice that this blog is extremely new, and I have only just started putting content up. As this blog will be technically oriented I would love to chat to people who work with computers or even just use them for fun. Welcome to Technical Notebook, my name is Stuart and I am a geek…

After blogging for almost two years at Secluded Habitat (my personal blog) I wanted to start focusing on blogging more about the things that I know, and computers… well lets just say I know a fair bit. This is not to say that I know everything, in the world of computers everything is constantly changing and anyone who tells you that they know everything about computers is themselves a fool.

Technical Notebook is a place that I started up as I wanted somewhere to be able to put technical solutions that I have either found in the deep dark recesses of the internet or otherwise developed myself to try to make things easier for people when they run into problems.

Often the articles that I write will assume a minimum level of techical knowledge about the subject matter, so this will not be a blog that you can come back and visit regularly, more an archive of solutions etc, hence the name Technical Notebook. At times however I will include a post or two from the inner ramblings that are my mind or something funny to lighten the mood. For the moment however I do not intend to update this blog more than once every couple of weeks.
